Mount Carmel, Illinois

Mt. Carmel, IL History

Located in Wabash County, Illinois in the south eastern part of the state, the town is currently home to more than 7,000 residents. Once home to many industrial jobs that included coal mines and factories such as snap on, the major employers today are the Gibson Generating Station, a nearby Toyota Motor Manufacturing Facility as well as oil & gas operations that tap reserves that numbered as high as 4 trillion barrels of oil. Mount Carmel is home to Wabash Community College with over 1300 students. The town is known for its laid back atmosphere and small town feels. Bonus Content: The town of Mount Carmel was featured on Ripley's Believe It Or Not for its multi-colored 12-span Parker Bridge that at one time connected the town to Princeton, Indiana. It has since been replaced by a brand new concrete and steel beam bridge.
